Estimate fence posts and panels

Enter the total fence length, planned post spacing and panel width. The calculator estimates the number of posts for a straight run and the number of panels needed to cover the entered length.

Post estimate

Total fence length ÷ post spacing is rounded up, then one end post is added for a straight run.

Panel estimate

Total fence length ÷ panel width is rounded up to the next whole panel.

Layout changes the real count

Corners, gates, terminal posts, grade changes and changes in direction can alter the final post count. Use this as a straight-run planning estimate and verify the actual layout before ordering.

Common fence calculator questions

Why is there an extra post?

A straight fence run needs a post at both ends, which is why the calculation adds one after dividing the run by spacing.

Are gate posts included?

No special gate allowance is added. Add gate and terminal posts based on your design.

Does terrain affect spacing?

It can. Slopes, corners and local construction requirements may change layout and spacing.
